This is the story of Yusuf and Baldev. Two young friends living in Lahore and spending all their time together, as only kids use to.
But suddenly one day their lives change. Their Country is partitioned and overnight Baldev is forced to move to Delhi. Since that moment he is unable to see, play and spend time with his best friend. Maybe forever.
At that time – it was 1947 – India and Pakistan became two separate Countries. A lot of people suffered for that event, exactly as Yusuf and Baldev did.
Time goes by, the two boys become adults, have their own families and get older, as it is pretty normal in life.
One day Baldev speaks with his granddaughter and tells the story of the never forgotten friendship with Yusuf.
The story is a video that for sure will let people cry or at least feel an intense emotion.
One of the biggest multinationals is behind this video: Google, to promote its service Search.
Yes, this is a commercial video even if it goes beyond usual spots. The story is the core of it.
The technology of Google is just a part of the story and makes things happen. Also the length is unusual compared to other adv.
In fact "Reunion" is not a "simple" video but a real – even short – movie that has also a political and social meaning, referring to problems that still affect India and Pakistan relationships (see also here what Coca Cola did at this purpose).
From a marketing and communication point of view the reason for such a video is clear.
Is technology human? Not at all, but it can help humans.
Who brings technology to life? Common people like you and I.
What's beyond Google's doodle? Men and women that work to help other people to work, socialize, connect and meet friends.
I like the human aspects in marketing and these kind of messages, even more when they come from such a big company.
Maybe things are really going to change and hopefully are moving towards the human marketing.
